Communication Access UK
2023
Communication Access UK is an organisation that focuses on supporting those with invisible and visible communication difficulties. They look to partner with institutions to create accessible spaces for all. A member of the Speech and Language therapy department at the University of East Anglia approached Communication Access to bring their training into the ecosystem of the University, in doing so a short film was to be commissioned to detail what the training is and how it can help solve difficulties for so many people. I was approached to Direct, Produce and Edit this film with a small cast and crew.
As part of the leading role in this project I helped to organise locations, cast and liase with the client in order to create a treatment that best suits the needs of the advert. Over the course of two weeks the film was then shot. It was decided that it was important that the film had a personal and natural feel, looking to just show people in their natural state throughout the University, highlighting how these problems can effect anyone.
As lead Video Editor on this project it was then up to me to work with the client team to cut together a final product that was both creatively strong and powerful in the message it was telling, with the variety of locations, using fact and figures on screen and then our hero montage at the end of the film, I believe this was achieved.
As of today the University of East Anglia is now the UK's first major university to fully adopt and implement Communication Access UK. And the film has gone on to be shown at a screening during Norwich Science Festival 2023 and then was a Finalist for the 2023 Impact and Innovation award at the University of East Anglia.
