The Big Lebowski - A Scene study

The Big Leboswki is a 1998 film directed by the Coen Brothers, as part of my degree I was tasked with creating a re-adaptation of a scene from the film in an effort to study how Directors use action and cinematography to form tone and genre. Instead of recreating the scene from the film it was decided to instead remodel the story into an action scene, heightening the drama of the original writing.

 

Quicker cute, close up shots and a dramatic score achieves this goal.

 

I was the Director, Actor and Video  Editor on this project, working with the cinematographer and other cast on set to create this darker atmosphere. It was important that the comedic notions of the original script were still there though can be seen within this new context instead, this is where acting in the scene myself helped.

As Video Editor I had tried a few different rough cuts before settling on this quicker pacing, using cut to blacks to elapse time and quick cuts in to show emotion helps to dramatise the action. Also working with the composer was important, tying the synths in with the cuts for example was a specific creative decision.
